Age-related hearing loss is the largest potentially modifiable risk factor for dementia, with the 2024 Lancet Commission estimating that 8% of global dementia cases are attributable to hearing loss. Multiple meta-analyses demonstrate a dose-dependent association: each 10 dB increase in hearing threshold correlates with accelerated cognitive decline, and moderate hearing loss carries approximately twice the dementia risk compared to normal hearing
